Thriving Coastal Town Economies :
Towards Asset Based Regeneration - Guy Rubin
Friday 11th July 2008

This day long seminar took place on Friday 11th July which offered an historical overview to the rise, decline and renaissance of Coastal Town economies across the UK and looked at how effective regeneration has been in delivering sustainable communities in the Coastal towns and focus extensively on the unique features of labour markets in Coastal Towns.  The afternoon session focused on Hasting LEGI and how they tried to tackle some of the underlying problems facing their town as with many other coastal towns. The latter part of the day addressed how best practice can be drawn upon in the revival and regeneration within the 5 Towns Network. Twelve attendees ranging from Business Link Sussex, Arun & Chichester District Councils, West Sussex County Council and Learning Skills Council took part in the day.

Feedback / Comments :

  • Very good. Reasonably balanced. Pity more delegates didn’t attend but equally more people might have lengthened the day.
  • Very good. Enjoyed the workshop sessions and good to hear from a lecturer who knows about coastal towns
  • Regenerating coastal town workshop – useful to hear about examples of current initiatives and their physical, social and economic impact
  • First group workshop, interesting to learn outcome and improvements
  • Future training requirements needed on: bid writing / how to access and search for them – process start to finish/Economic prosperity/
  • How to effectively engage local groups (especially opposition groups)
